aemi & Docs Ireland present: Voice Recognition

Each year aemi presents a programme of moving image work by artists and experimental filmmakers at Docs Ireland, aiming to call attention to the diverse ways artists and experimental filmmakers are continuing to deftly expand, enrich and challenge the conventions of the documentary form. In this programme of remarkable new work from artists Jenny Brady (Ireland), Miryam Charles (Haiti-Canada), Dan Guthrie (U.K.), Jacqueline Holt (U.K.-Northern Ireland) and Sofia Theodore-Pierce (U.S.A.), ideas around voice and lineage are explored through connections to the body or instances of disembodiment. While experiences of disempowerment permeate the works gathered here, they are enacted as loving dedications or expressions of gratitude for those who have made or shaped us.
This screening will be followed by a Q&A with artists from the programme

About learning and other journeys shows a selection of films by four artist filmmakers, Simon Aeppli, Michael Hanna, Jacqueline Holt and Paul Moore, whose work is centred in Northern Ireland.
Although all different in their practice, they share a sense of exploration, not just in a geographical sense through journeys to their close environment, landscapes, towns or archives, but they also reveal a deep interest in understanding the social landscape, the rituals and manners of people.
The short films present a kaleidoscopic view and interpretation of past and present social histories in Northern Ireland, layers of stories of personal lives and political realities. In their individual positions and artistic approach, the films give a portrait of the region and its citizens in a highly reflective, questioning manner.

I’ve just started a 3 month residency at BPW Organised by their new curator Moran Been-noon and with technical support from Dónall Billings….really pleased to be able to take advantage of this terrific resource.
Jacqueline’s Jerwood Bursary will be instrumental in developing a mentoring relationship in order to unpack the role and conditions of the artist. She will explore the institutional, social and personal barriers to participation in contemporary practice.

‘Out of step and slightly awkward I am articulated through identities as daughter, sister, artist, office worker, dog owner, benefits claimant, unpaid/paid cultural worker. The seesaw of survival as an artist and as a citizen: the hidden life, the under-the-radar life in conflict with the desire to be legitimate. Squeezing my art practice in between the everyday exigencies of earning a living, creating time, space and energy to enable a continuity of art practice. And in parallel, trying to muddle along in the art world, where the studio is home but the art world feels at times like a minefield of social mores that feel like a foreign land.’ JH
This Moment of Being is an exhibition by Jacqueline Holt that documents the day-to-day life and experiences of a cultural worker. Opening up discourse around cultural production by exposing process and practice, trying to make ends meet and touching on the personal. By using peripheral and fleeting moments of connection and intimacy in an effort to capture the unseen life that escapes the direct focus of intended production. The exhibition brings together photography, sculpture and video, using the exhibition as a medium to mark a moment in process.

It’s been great to have a studio at Flax these last few months. As part of the launch for the new space at the old UTV building. We were asked by curator Phillip McCrilly to insert works around the building. I chose a piece from 2011 and tucked it into one of the lift recesses in the rear stairway.

Clear Blue Sky 2018/86 was made in response to Soft Fiction Projects request for an image for their new publication, Doris. The title evolved from a phrase I had heard somewhere saying that, ‘there is no sky between us’, the implication was that we are of one mind.
DORIS was launched during Printing Plant, the first artists book fair organised by Looiersgracht 60 (Amsterdam) in conjunction with the Amsterdam Art Weekend on 23rd-25th November 2018.
